cPanel vs DirectAdmin: 2026 Agency Workflow Scorecard
cPanel vs DirectAdmin is a comparison of agency operating work: who creates an account, who owns it, who may act without the owner password, how a mailbox is set up, what a backup contains, what a restore onto a copy proves, when one migrated site is accepted, and how a new staffer learns the sheet. The panel is the click path. It is not the host's actual service limit.
Editorial review date: 10 October 2026. The original publication date is unchanged.
A package, disk, or bandwidth figure on a create form is a panel field. The host's limit is processor, memory, file count, outbound mail, how long the host keeps copies, and which login support accepts. A number on screen is not that limit.
cPanel vs DirectAdmin as seven tasks on two trials
Time the same seven tasks on each trial, and leave the minutes on your sheet. This note does not fill them.
The scene is illustrative, not a client report and not a measured study. A five-person agency in Rawalpindi opens two trials. The owner holds the highest login. Two people build sites. One handles words and mailboxes. The new accounts person is the staffer to train. They time the same seven tasks on each trial and note who clicked. Sharing the owner password to finish a task fails delegation.
Create the account and name the owner
Create one fictional client from the login allowed to create clients. Record the owner before any welcome note.
On a cPanel server, ownership is inspectable. The WHM reseller documentation covers transferring accounts to a reseller, a Reseller Center that adds or removes reseller status, and a list of reseller accounts. Write the owner you set. If only the highest admin owns it, write that. Shared use of that password is not an ownership boundary.
Open a private window with the client password alone. Other agency domains mean the row fails. Package, disk, and bandwidth values stay in the panel column. Only caps the host stated go in the host column. An unstated cap stays blank.
The DirectAdmin backup, restore, and migration documentation is not a create-user manual, so this note does not describe that screen. It does separate user, reseller, and admin, with backups on different paths. Record which level the new account sits under. That level is who can back it up later.
Delegate a staff login without sharing a password
A named colleague should do one job without the owner password and without the client password. In the illustration, the content person creates the mailbox and one builder runs the backup.
Reseller admin is a distinct role and does not set commercial quotas. WHM reseller screens add or remove reseller status, edit nameservers and privileges with access control lists, delegate IP addresses, assign a shared IP, and show disk and bandwidth use, including suspend, unsuspend, and terminate. A price, a sales allowance, and an invoice term are commercial records. Reseller status does not write them. Leave off any privilege wider than the job, and note its name.
Use a narrower login when the trial has one. If the narrowest login is still reseller or admin, record that. Pass evidence is a second session: one allowed task completes, and one forbidden task is refused. This note does not claim the panels use the same privilege names. Keep each trial's list separate.
Create a mailbox and take settings from that account
Create one mailbox, then read the values for that mailbox. Do not reuse another domain's sheet or type a server name from memory.
Set Up Mail Client opens from Email Accounts, then Connect Devices beside that mailbox. Manual settings show its username and password. Incoming and outgoing names are generated for that account: the mailbox domain when a valid certificate is installed, otherwise the server hostname. Mail settings come from the actual account. The host can hide this screen in Feature Manager, and temporary domains do not get email service, so record which block you hit. POP3, on that page, downloads mail and removes it from the server, so a second device cannot see it.
Pass evidence is one message in and one message out, in a client built from those settings. Webmail only shows the mailbox exists. This note does not describe a DirectAdmin mail screen. On that trial, read the values it shows for that mailbox and send the same two messages. Do not paste ports across unless that trial showed them.
Run a backup as the role that will own the job
Write which role started the backup, what it claimed to include, and where the file went.
DirectAdmin backup scope depends on user, reseller, and admin roles. One system writes a tar.gz per user, with databases, mail, domains, and the site, and offers a one-click restore. Admin Backup/Transfer, reseller Manage User Backups, and user Site Backup can create that kind of file. The user screen has no schedule. Files sit under the user, the reseller, or admin, depending on who ran the job. Reseller and admin restores can keep local nameservers and SPF or take them from the file. A separate admin System Backup includes service configuration and has no one-click restore.
Run it as the role you will use after go-live. An admin test does not prove a reseller backup. If the restoring login cannot read the file, both rows fail. On the cPanel trial, record the menu that role could open and the file you got. Do not copy the DirectAdmin list across.
Restore onto a copy before you call the backup real
Putting the file back over the only live site is not the restore task. Use a second hostname visitors do not use. The copy should show a page and a database row planted beforehand, and a test message if mail was in the file. DirectAdmin's account backup is the documented one-click path. System Backup passes only after a written procedure on the copy. Name the system and the copy hostname.
Accept one migrated site with a checklist
A transfer message that says finished is not acceptance. Move one site, and leave public DNS on the old host until every row below passes. The illustrative move is one brochure, with the planted page, the planted row, and one mailbox. A stop means you do not change live DNS.
| Check | Pass condition on the copy | Stop if |
|---|---|---|
| Owners named | Source owner and destination owner are written down | Either owner is whoever remembers the password |
| Same moment | Files and database come from one backup, with role and path noted | The database is from a different time than the files |
| Planted page | A page made before the move is visible on the copy | Only an empty shell loads |
| Planted row | A database row made before the move is readable on the copy | The row exists only on the source |
| Mail from that account | A test message arrives using settings from the destination mailbox | Settings came from another mailbox or from memory |
| Staff boundary | A staff login opens this site and no other client | The test used the client password or the highest admin |
| DNS held | Public DNS still points at the old host | Live records changed early |
| Restore named | The backup system is named, then restored or followed in writing | The only proof is the transfer screen |
After the move, read mail settings from the destination account. On a DirectAdmin reseller or admin restore, note whether nameservers and SPF stayed local or came from the backup. State the scope you checked. Do not assume either tool carried every rule or certificate.
Train a new staffer on the sheet
The illustrative accounts person runs the seven tasks from a staff login. The owner does not use the mouse. Name any missing menu. A skill only the owner has is a training debt, not a verdict on the other trial. Repeat there before you compare. If the pass needs the owner password, delegation fails too.
the task desk can take a restore rehearsal or a one-site move when nobody has passed the sheet. The handoff still needs the copy, the planted page, the planted row, and the role that clicked.
Fill the trial workflow scorecard from evidence
Score only what that trial showed. Leave minutes on your sheet. An unrun row stays open. A guessed pass will be trusted later, which is worse than a blank.
| What you time on a trial | Acceptable evidence | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Create account | Owner recorded; client login opened privately; other clients hidden | Package fields stay in the panel column; unknown host caps stay blank |
| Delegate a staff login | Second session completes one allowed task and is refused one forbidden task | Reseller admin is a distinct role and does not set commercial quotas |
| Create a mailbox | Settings from that account; one message in and one message out | A missing menu may be a feature flag; a temporary domain may lack mail |
| Run a backup | Role, included data, and file location written down | DirectAdmin backup scope depends on user, reseller, and admin roles |
| Restore onto a copy | Planted page and row visible on a hostname that is not live | Overwriting the only live copy does not count |
| Migrate one site | Checklist signed while public DNS still points at the old host | One site; a progress message is not the signature |
| Train a new staffer | New person finishes on a staff login; owner does not use the mouse | Repeat on the second trial before you compare |
Keep the host limit beside the scorecard
Set the host limit beside the seven rows before a client moves. Ask what happens at the processor, memory, file-count, or mail cap, who keeps an off-server copy, and which login support will recognise. A quiet restore does not answer a missing off-server copy. A staff login does not answer a commercial quota the panel never shows.
agency hosting is where accounts, delegation, and a restore rehearsal can be treated as operating work. Bring the scorecard, blanks included. A preference without the seven rows is not an acceptance test.
Score the trial tasks before you move a client.
